Hello! Saying goodbye to summer always leaves me with a heavy heart (sounds dramatic, but I’m very winter averse), and the grim weather and temperatures we’ve had in August have made my SAD start early this year. Luckily, I booked my holidays late and will be sunning myself on a Greek island in T-minus 12 days. 🙏🏻 Below, you’ll find some transitional trends to pull you out of your post-summer slump, along with some food and culture recs.
See you in autumn! X

Rugby tops
The rugby top/polo shirt trend has been bubbling under the surface since late last year when Hailey Bieber stepped out wearing a striped number by Aimé Leon Dore. They enjoyed another moment in March 2024 when both Hailey and Rihanna wore the same bright blue and red Loewe top. But it’s only now, in autumn 2024, that we’re going to see the full extent of this wearable trend. Part Clean Girl, part preppy – pair a collared top with tailored shorts or a mini, and finish the look with sneaks or a cutesy socks ‘n’ loafers combo. I’ve had a polo shirt phobia for as long as I can remember, so this is a difficult pill for me to swallow. But I DO enjoy the vibes of the trend, so I’m going to try to conquer my fear.

Ramit Sethi
I heard Ramit Sethi talking as a guest on a recent podcast (this episode of ‘Do You F*cking Mind?’) and I found his approach to finances so interesting but straightforward. I then went on to binge his Netflix series ‘How to Get Rich’, because I’ve always loved hearing people’s money stories (shoutout Refinery29’s Money Diaries). Ramit puts a focus on investing for the future while still enjoying what you love in the present (and not worrying about whether or not you should buy your daily cappuccino). He also encourages people to seriously think before buying a property over renting – an opinion I’ve never heard anyone voice anywhere else!

A glowy base
I’ve always been more of a matte makeup girly, but over the past few months I’ve switched to the glowy side, and I think I like it. As your skin gets older, a hydrated face with light-reflecting makeup is the way to go, and I’ve recently bought both L’Oreal’s Lumi Glotion and Charlotte Tilbury’s much-hyped Flawless Filter. (Side note: I think I actually prefer the Glotion 👀) Both formulas are multi-use and can be worn on their own, mixed with foundation or as a highlighter. During summer, I’ve worn them with concealer, but once my tan has faded, I’ll be mixing them with foundation for slightly more coverage.

Birria Shop, Glasgow
One thing about me is, I love tacos. So, I made a special mid-week trip to Cathcart Road to try out new taco joint, Birria Shop, which is run by the same folks behind Rafa’s Diner. Unlike Rafa’s, Birria shop focuses purely on (you guessed it) Mexican birria tacos and has a small menu featuring beef, classic lamb and goat birria and a veggie option. I went for the beef taco trio, which comes with a consommé dip, for a bargainous £9?! I absolutely had the meat sweats after, and it was worth it – can’t wait to go back.
accessorising with…
Charms
Adorn your neck, wrists and bags with bells, whistles, trinkets and more – charms are back! This trend came about after Miu Miu showed bags laden with charms for AW24 (below) – however, these charms alone will set you back roughly £1800! If you don’t have a spare 2K lying around, it’s time to get creative! Layer your jewellery or decorate your favourite bag with scarves, keyrings, costume jewels or flower clips. Think shells, fruits and brights for now, then switch it up with crosses, precious stones and mixed metals for winter. I’ve seen some really nice bits by jewellery brand Neck On The Line that I might have to purchase.
